Golden and a group of supporters came up with a way that the Aggies could raise funds for their basketball program.
“We have started what we are calling the Aggie Tip-Off Club,” Golden said. “We are just trying to get some involvement in the basketball program. We had a meeting at Marble City Grill couple weeks ago. People made a minimum contribution. Throughout the year, we are going to send out news letters keeping up with the progress of the season. We are going to have a night at a home game where we recognize all the members of the Tip-Off Club. It is basically people that we reached out to that said that they want to do what ever they can to support the basketball program. It is not a booster club; we don’t have elected officers or anything like that. It is a group of people from around the area that committed to help the basketball program one way or another.”
Golden said he wanted to give the people that wanted to support the basketball program a chance to do so. He said there 50 people that showed up to there first meeting.
“I have a couple of people throughout the season that were good supporters of the basketball program,” Golden said. “We just put our heads together and decided that there was a good group of people around Sylacauga that probably wanted to be involved and wanted to be able to contribute, but they have not been given the opportunity to do so. We just reached out to different individuals and some businesses to let them know what we were doing. We asked them if they wanted to support the basketball program. We have several to sign up to be a member of the club and they wanted to purchase a sponsorship with the basketball program where we sell signs in the gym. There were some individuals that didn’t want anything in return; they just wanted to support the program.”
The funds raised for the program will help pay for traveling expenses for away games as well as a wide variety of things that needed to run a basketball program.
“There are a number of things in the season that comes up that you need,” Golden said. “Our junior varsity basketball team and our freshman basketball team really need jerseys. Some of them are wearing uniforms that are seven or eight years old. They are in good shape but they are a little out dated, so some of them will get new jerseys. It will go towards new basketballs, the expense of travel during the season. If we are fortunate enough to make another run at the playoffs; this season we went and we stayed over night both times at the regional and regional final. All of that stuff cost money, a form of transportation and all that. There are multiple things that the fund will go to help. It definitely helps to raise some money and just as big for us to get people excited about basketball at Sylacauga High School.”
