Mayor Sam Wright called it a great day for Sylacauga to see the observation point opened. He spoke of how marble mining had been an important part of the city’s fabric for more than a century, and how the annual Marble Festival has given the community a new push.
Imerys’ North American director of operations Todd Swanger said his company is proud to be part of the project and happy to see the area open for others to enjoy.
Informative plaques at the site provide details of quarrying at the site.
Long known as the Marble City, the observation point, the Marble Festival, and the recent addition of marble sculptures in the city are making the name more tangible, and helping to project a unique image of the city to the outside world. It’s putting an important part of the city’s heritage front and center, and should be a source of community pride in the years to come.
