Djarris Katrell McKenzie, 30, of Short Scott Street, was arrested last week on three counts of forgery relating to an incident in November 2011. She was charged Tuesday with theft of property in the second degree and an additional count of forgery in the second degree.
Ursula Deshun McIntyre, 39, of Highland Street in Alexander City, was charged with two forgery counts.
Thomas said more charges are expected against these two suspects as well as a possible third suspect. McKenzie’s bond was set at $30,000 on the first three charges, but neither suspect had had an initial court appearance as of Wednesday afternoon.
The recent charges involve a purse stolen from the Fishers of Men Bookstore in Talladega last week. Three forged checks were presented at AOC Texaco, and the victim’s ATM card was used to make a cash withdrawal.
The same two suspects are believed to have cashed three more checks each from a Wachovia bank account in Alabaster and a Wells-Fargo account held by a woman from Childersburg.
Theft of property in the second degree and forgery in the second degree are both Class C felonies in Alabama, punishable upon conviction by one year and one day to 10 years in prison.
