For that the Lady Bulldogs had four players to earn a spot on the 2012 All Talladega County Basketball team.
Jasmine Richardson earned The Daily Home Player of the Year honors. As a sophomore she averaged 18.5 points per game nine rebounds, five assists for four steals per game. She helped the Lady Bulldogs go 20-9 on the season and advance to the Sweet 16 in Class 1A.
“I think it is a great award for Jasmine,” Winterboro head coach Sheroderick Smith said. “She is definitely gifted and talented. To me she got this award in one of her down years. She had some great games overall, but I think she went through a slump this year. For her to still come out on top with an award like that speaks volumes on how other coaches view her capabilities. Hopefully, she will be able to catapult from this and represent the school well. Player of the Year speaks a lot for our program. We have some great girl programs in this county. For her to be able to get this award I am really thankful to be able coach a player like Jasmine Richardson.”
Tanesha Merritt also earned first team honors, which marks the first time that two Winterboro players made first team consecutive seasons. The Lady Bulldogs floor general averaged nine points per game, four steals and three boards per game.
“She is undecided whether she wants to pursue collegiate sports,” Smith said. “Whatever she decides I think she has committed to become a better high school point guard. Her role is probably going to be a little bit different this year, because she is a good leader and she is going to be leaving a legacy to the younger girls. While she is leading she is going to be teaching at the same time and trying to become a better high school player all in one. She has her hands full this year.”
Anslea Twymon earned second team honors for Winterboro. As an eighth grader she averaged 11 points, four rebounds and two steals per game.
Tiffany Vincent earned second team honors. The sophomore averaged seven points and seven rebounds per game for Winterboro.
Robert Duncan and the TC Central Lady Fighting Tigers also had a historic season. TC Central won 20 games this season for the first time in school history. They also earned a trip to the Class 1A Sub-Regional Tournament.
For their efforts they had three players named to the 2012 All-County team and Co-Coach of the Year honors.
“It was a prosperous season,” TC head coach Robert Duncan said. “Even though we were a year ahead of schedule. A couple years ago when we tore this down to build a program within a program we were looking forward to the 2012-2013 season, but we sort of jumped leaps and bounds in the 2011-2012 season due to the hard work the young girls put in.”
TC Central had two players to earn first team honors: Tiarrial Duncan and Savona Garrett. Duncan led TCC in scoring with 17 points per game.
Tiarrial Duncan is such an exceptional basketball player, Duncan said. “She is more or less looked at as a scorer, but no one really sees the little things she does with her defense. Her defensive presence, her length on the floor, her quickness and she is our top rebounder. When you have freshman put up those types of numbers it’s something good to look forward too.”
Garrett gave the Lady Fighting Tigers a spark every time she stepped on the court.
Savona had an up and down season last year, Duncan said. But to be an eighth grader she really excelled. “She has a great athletic frame to work with. She had some growing pains, but she was not afraid of anything. She has a no fear mentality and that is probably one of her greatest assets that she brings to the table.”
The ASD Lady Silent Warriors had two players to earn All-County honors. Tuedae Dunklin earned first team honors and Kaneesha Stallworth earned honorable mention honors.
The Lady Wolves of Fayetteville had four players to make the All-County team. Ledra Leonard earned first team honor, Brittany Snyder earned second team honors while Shay Roberson and Jade Brasher earned honorable mention team.
B.B. Comer had four players to earn All-County honors. Valencia Lawson and Keaina Seals earned second team honors, while Maegan Williams and Shernelia Cook earned spots on the honorable mention team.
Winterboro’s Smith and TC Central’s Duncan earned Co-Coach of the Year honors.
