FootWash Ministries, an evangelistic association, is sponsoring the “Back to Basics” student conference with former top 10 American Idol contestant Chris Sligh performing Sept. 13 at the Sylacauga High School Auditorium.Bryan Taunton, president and founder of FWM, said the conference is open to everyone who is interested in attending.
“It’s geared towards students 8 years old and up,” he said. “When you start talking bout American Idol, you can’t eliminate the 8, 9 and 10 year olds, but it’s really for the whole family. I think it’s good when parents are involved in what their children are doing.”
The conference will began with a performance by Jason Walker, followed by a message of hope from Taunton and end with a concert by Sligh.
Sligh was a contestant in season six of American Idol and has a hit single on the radio “Empty Me.”
“This conference will be the first of many opportunities to bring big-name talent to the area,” Taunton said.
He said he decided to name the conference Back to Basics after seeing a recent report on Pew Forum, which gives information on issues and debates related to religion, news, politics and more.
“It serves 35,000 people and of those people, 80 percent said they were followers of Jesus Christ,” he said. “And of that 80 percent, 57 percent said there were other ways to eternal life other than their faith. John 14:6 says Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through him. There are no other options. It’s time to bring people back to the fundamentals of faith, go back to the basics.”
Taunton said the event is intended to be an intentional outreach tool for the local church community.
Tickets for the conference are $12 and are available in Sylacauga at Scoop of Fun Ice Cream Parlor, Eddie’s Style shop, in Childersburg at the Amen Corner or online at www.FootWashMinistries.org.
