C'burg all-stars win two

The Childersburg 11-year-old All-Stars continued their domination of opponents on Sunday when they defeated Grand Bay, 15-0 and Florence, 18-1.

In the first game Childersburg’s Ryan Garrett pitched two innings, giving up no hits and striking out five. Tyler Jackson pitched the final two innings, striking out five, walking one and giving up one hit.

At the plate, Zack Lightsey went 2-3 with a double, two runs scored and four RBIs. Jackson had two hits including a double and two RBIs. He also scored three runs.

Garrett was 3-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and four RBIs. Jamel Rosten had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored.

Hunter McCain had two hits, scored one run and batted in a run. Walker Holmes had a hit, scored a run and had one RBI. Darious Hale had a hit, scored two runs and had two RBIs.

Childersburg didn’t slack off any in the second game, defeating Florence, 18-1. Lightsey pitched the first three innings for the team, striking out one and giving up two hits and one run. Garrett pitched the fourth inning, striking out one.

Offensively, Childersburg’s Cameron Twymon had three hits, including a home run. Twymon also scored four runs in the game. Roston had two doubles, scored three runs and had five RBIs. Lightsey had a home run, a double, an RBI and scored three runs.

Jackson went 2-2 with a double, four runs scored and two RBIs. Garrett had two hits, scored two runs and had two RBIs. Holmes went 2-4 with a run scored, three RBIs and a double.

McCain was 1-4 with a home run.

Childersburg faced Satsuma on Monday. Results from the game were unavailable at press time.

CHILDERSBURG 10, GRAND BAY 6
The Childersburg 12-year-old All-Stars advanced to the semifinals of the Cal Ripken State Tournament by defeating Grand Bay 10-6 in the final pool play game.

Childersburg trailed 5-3 going into the top of the sixth inning when the bats came alive.

Reeves Brashear lead off the inning with a single. Will Donohoo was hit by a pitch before Kyle Batson singled to drive in pinch-runner Cullen Green. Tyler Goss and Corey Morris both added an RBI single. Michael Mims reached on an error, scoring Goss and Morris. Trevor Bates then bunted for a hit and Deontae Gilbert reached on a fielder’s choice. Brashear doubled to drive in two runs. By the time Peyton Logan singled and Grand Bay threw out the runner trying to score from second, Childersburg had plated seven runs.

Morris and Brashear ended the game with two hits each.

On the mound, Bates led the way for Childersburg, getting the win after pitching the complete game. He struck out 10 and gave up seven hits and allowed two earned runs.

Childersburg fell to Attalla, 12-9 earlier Monday. Michael Mims took the loss on the hill. He struck out eight while giving up four earned runs. At the plate, Donovan Flenord went 2-3 with a home run. Deontae Gilbert had two hits, including a three-run homer. Bates was 2-4 on the day while Goss had a solo home run. Mims and Donahoo each had hits for Childersburg.

Childersburg was 2-2 in pool play and will face Attalla in the semifinals at 4 p.m. today. Should Childersburg win, the team would face the winner of the Coosa-Demopolis game in the championship game at 7 p.m.

CHILDERSBURG 11, DEMOPOLIS 1
The Childersburg 12 year old all-stars opened pool play with an 11-1 win over Demopolis in the 2008 Cal Ripken 12-year-old state tournament. Donovan Flenord led the way on the mound, pitching three innings, striking out six batters and giving up one hit. Offensively, Childersburg was led by Deontae Gilbert who had a three-run homerun and a solo homerun. Will Donahoo added two hits. Michael Mims, Trevor Bates, Reeves Brashear, Peyton Logan, Kyle Batson, Donovan Flenord, and Josh Wheeler each added a hit.
