Games go on, even in the heat

Heather Baggett
07-15-2008

Weather in July is pretty much predictable in Alabama.

Highs in the mid-90s with a 30 to 40 percent chance of afternoon thunderstorms, some of which may be severe. There, I’ve just given you the forecast for the rest of the month. While you would think the heat and humidity would keep people as close to an air conditioner as possible this time of year, that wasn’t the case on Saturday.

A couple of sporting events sent me to Childersburg on Saturday. I was a little surprised by the number of people out participating in various outdoor events in the town this weekend.

On my way to the ballpark to catch an inning or two of the 15-year-old All-Star tournament, I saw a crowd of people enjoying a round or two of golf at Coosa Pines. Just down the road, the parking lot at the boat launch was pretty full as well with fishermen out enjoying some time on the water.

Garland Justice Field featured another large group of people watching some of the up-and-coming baseball players in the area play in the district tournament.

After watching a couple of innings of Sylacauga and Lineville’s game, I headed over to Red Eagle Gun Club to take in a little of the skeet shooting competition.

All during the half-hour interview, I was dripping sweat. This was not a nice spring day. It was hot. The humidity was awful.

And yet it didn’t seem to bother the competitors at Red Eagle, the players and spectators at the ball field, the golfers at Coosa Pines or the fishermen on the river.

I don’t envy the sports enthusiasts having to endure the hot weather, but it is nice to see a lot of people enjoying the activities available in the area.

As for the youth baseball games, which occurred all across Talladega County (as well as the rest of the state) this weekend, the varsity programs in the area will have plenty of talent coming up in the next few years.

Anyone who didn’t get out this past weekend may want to take advantage of the less-humid weather for the next couple of days. I’m sure the humidity will be back by the weekend, so now might be the best time to get out and participate in some of the outdoor activities the area has to offer.
