Pack plenty of food when camping

Larry White
10-09-2008

I guess anytime you can get away is a good time to go camping, but there is just something special about camping in the early fall.

The nights are cool enough to make you cover up with a light blanket, and the days are just right for a long sleeve shirt.

Leaves are changing colors, beginning to fall and there is usually a gentle breeze blowing. The air is so clean and fresh. It is great to be awakened at 6 a.m. to the sound of crows scurrying around the campsite looking for scraps of food dropped on the ground from the night before.

Build an early morning campfire and smell the aroma of fresh coffee brewing in the pot. If everyone could start the day off like that the world would be a better place.

This atmosphere causes people to do strange things.

I remember one camping trip I went on with my dad to Mimosa Point on Hatchet Creek.

We had planned to fish for two days. The first morning dad started cooking breakfast bright and early. I could not believe that bacon and eggs could smell so good.

The two of us actually ate a dozen eggs, a pound of bacon, half a loaf of bread, a large helping of grits, some grape jam and several cups of coffee. We could never eat that much in one meal at home.

We had a light lunch and another feast for supper. There were pan-fried crappie fillets, french fries and the other half of the loaf of bread leftover from breakfast.

I really don’t know why food has such a good taste when it is prepared at a campsite. I could never eat that much food in one meal at home.

If you decide to do a little weekend camping let me offer you a little advice. Pack all the food you want, then double it.

It seems like fresh air mixed with food makes it taste much better.
