The Lady Lions of Munford had a season players and fans won’t soon forget. Munford won its area tournament and then won two sub-state games to advance to the 3A state tournament in Montgomery. While they didn’t come home with a trophy, the Lady Lions have a lot to look forward to in the future as all of the players will return for next season.
The awards kept rolling in for the Lady Lions as they led the All-County team with five selections.
Second baseman Jessica Butterworth, center fielder Keyana Chapman, pitcher Celeste Goodwin, shortstop Kaylin Helms and third baseman DeAnna White all made the All-County team after helping to lead their team to the state tournament.
“The girls have accomplished more than they ever thought they really could this season,” interim head coach Anne Hopkins said in an earlier interview. “I truly believe they … gave 110 percent, and they don’t have anything to be ashamed of.”
The Lady Wolves of Fayetteville finished the season with their fifth straight area tournament championship and a first round sub-state appearance. Fayetteville had five players make the All-County team. Shay Huntley, Miranda Lee, Alley Smith, Lauren Spates and Honey Zeigler all helped lead their team to the playoffs in 2008. Head coach Heather Chaplin said the team was young, but the players worked hard and improved as the season progressed.
“I’m very proud of the girls,” Chaplin said in an earlier interview. “They really came together during area, and played like a team.
“They came a very long way this season.”
The Lady Tigers of B.B. Comer fell short of making the playoffs in 2008, but did make great strides in tournaments and area play throughout the season. Comer battled Childersburg for the county tournament championship, falling just short of the title. Seven players from the squad were named to the All-County team. Julisha Cook, Keisha Hale, Kayla Holmes, Shelby Jones, Cymone Kelly, Kaneesha Knight and Carol Beth Robinson all received All-County honors for their play in 2008.
The Lady Bears of Lincoln suffered a heartbreaking loss to Munford in the area tournament to lose out on a spot in the playoffs, but several players had a stellar season for the team.
Codi Johnson, Tami Johnson, Leah Lovell, Jordan Ray and Lindsey Sims were all named to the All-County team.
Jennifer Stockdale and Leilani Perry represented Talladega County Central on the team.
