ST. CLAIR EDITORIALS

Of special note

12-21-2006

Miss Leeds Outstanding Teen Chandler Champion is wise beyond her years. At 13, she recognizes exactly what is important in life and is hoping to be role model for it.

Her platform is literacy. Why? “Reading expands your knowledge and broadens your imagination,” she quickly replies.

The Alabama School of Fine Arts student who lives in Leeds will be touting that message throughout her reign that began Dec. 2. And we encourage full support of her efforts.

Literacy is a major issue holding Alabama back with a quarter of the population designated as functionally illiterate. At 13, Champion knows the impact of those statistics, and she is setting out to do something about it.

We congratulate her on her title, and we thank her for using it to champion such a worthy cause.
