A Springville man was killed in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 20 early Sunday morning.

Dustin Charles Newsome, 22, was killed at approximately 4:15 a.m. Dec. 17 when the 2006 Ford Focus he was driving let the roadway and struck a piece of construction equipment, State Trooper Sgt. Tim Sartain said.

The accident occurred as Newsome traveled westbound along Interstate 20 near mile marker 176.

Sartain said Newsome was wearing a seatbelt and the accident is still under investigation.

Newsome is survived by his mother, Kelly Epps; stepfather Dan Waid; sister Lanie Epps; and his 2-year-old daughter Madison Newsome.

Newsome was employed locally with a construction company and had recently received a full academic scholarship to Gadsden State to pursue a degree in civil engineering. Family members say he was returning from a family Christmas gathering in Georgia when the accident occurred.

A memorial service is set for Dec. 21 at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church.
