Christmas should be a happy, wonderful experience for children of all ages across the world. However, for many needy children nationwide and right here in St. Clair County, Christmas would be just another day were it not for the kindness and generosity shown by hundreds and hundreds of people.
Such is the case with Living Water Ministries in Ashville. This past Saturday, more than $20,000 worth of new Fisher-Price toys was given to needy families in the area. On top of that, more than 100 needy families received food.
Ron Howell, administrator of the food ministry, said it was fantastic and it was the largest crowd ever,
“We gave out 400 to 500 toys and over 3,000 pounds of food … ,” Howell said. “It made us feel good because God gave His most precious gift — Jesus Christ. That was the ultimate gift. He teaches us in the Bible that if we do for the least of these, we do unto Him. He tells us to care for the less fortunate. Reaching out and helping other people is fulfilling God’s Great Commission.”
Howell added that after the food and toy drive Saturday, he and his wife were visiting around in the neighborhood.
“We knocked on a door and a lady opened it and there stood a little girl only with a diaper on,” he said. “When we gave her a new toy, she started jumping up and down with a big smile on her face.”
Howell said Living Water Ministries is just a small congregation but they give out food on the third Saturday of every month to anyone in need. They give out toys only during Christmas.
“During the past year, we have been able to help over 1,000 families,” Howell said. “Although we are small, God has multiplied the loaves and fishes.”
The pastor of Living Water Ministries is Rev. Mitch Underwood.
