The Hewitt-Trussville Huskies are off to their best start since 2002. They have now put together nine wins in a row and are 9-2 on the season.

The latest win came Friday on the road at Pinson Valley as they upended the Indians 72-60.

Pinson Valley was on top 25-21 after one quarter of play and the Huskies closed the gap to 40-39 at intermission.

The third quarter belonged to Hewitt-Trussville as they outscored the Indians 16-9 to take a 55-49 lead into the fourth quarter. The Huskies also won the scoring battle in the last period 17-11 to make the final score 72-60.

Leading the Huskies was Christian Watford, who had a double-double with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Matt Dickey pumped in 16 points, while Joey Dunion put up 12 points. Michael Gunter and Adrian Cook totaled seven points each, while David Holoman had five points and six boards. Ethan Frazier scored four points.

The Huskies shot 52 percent from the field (25-of-48), including 8-out-of-8 from beyond the arc. They also won the rebounding battle 35-15.

Hewitt-Trussville coach Bo Coln said practice sessions have been more intense this year because the guys are competing, not just going through the motions.

“We have more of a balanced attack this year with our guards making shots,” Coln said. “Our post players are playing well right now, and our guards are getting them the ball in good position to score.”

Coln said although they are 9-2 after 11 games and currently on a nine-game winning streak, there is work to be done defensively.

“If we can get it together on defense, this team could be one of the best teams we’ve had at Hewitt since I’ve been here,” Coln said. “It’s a long season and we have a long way to go.”

The Huskies were scheduled to play at Springville this past Tuesday and will compete at a tournament at Spain Park that starts today and runs through Saturday.
