Overtime thrillers

Gary Hanner
12-28-2006

During the past week, the Moody Blue Devils have seen their share of overtime games — one that went great and the other a heartbreaker.

Moody broke a three-game losing streak with a 60-57 overtime victory over the St. Clair County Saints but then lost to Springville 63-55, also in overtime.

Moody 60, SCCHS 57 (OT)

Clutch free throw shooting down the stretch, especially from Marcus Hutchins helped the Blue Devils edge the Saints. Hutchins scored 12 points, all from the free throw line, all in the second half. He hit six of his free throws in overtime.

After the Blue Devils scored the initial basket to lead 2-0, SCCHS went on a 9-2 run to take a 9-4 lead. They led 11-6 after one quarter of play and were still on top 19-12 at the break.

With five minutes left in the third quarter, the Saints were on top 26-16. During the next seven minutes, on into the fourth quarter, Moody went on a 20-2 run to take a 36-28 lead.

SCCHS continued to fight back and when James Shaw nailed a 3-pointer with 1:46 left, it tied the game at 40-40.

Shaw again tied the game at 48-48 with a trey with 11 seconds left in regulation.

Free throws helped Moody pull out the 60-57 victory.

Malik Major led the Blue Devils with 15 points. Bret Owens pumped in 14 points while Bradley Seals had a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Nick Talley scored nine points and had 11 rebounds.

Leading the Saints and all scorers was Courtney Miller with 25 points. Shaw finished the game with 12 points while Warren Macon, Justin Bruce and Corey McIntyre all had six points each. Deontrez Brown totaled three points.

Moody improved to 7-3 with the win while the Saints fell to 6-6.

Springville 63, Moody 55 (OT)

This overtime game did not go Moody’s way as they lost to Springville 63-55. The Blue Devils led 13-12 after the first quarter, 26-21 at halftime and 33-30 after three quarters.

The two teams continued to battle back and forth in the fourth quarter. The shot of the game was a 3-pointer by Springville’s Cayce Lindsey to tie the game 47-47 at the end of regulation.

In overtime, Springville took control outscoring Moody 16-8 to win 63-55.

Springville’s Sam Tremble had a double double as she scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Zak McLaughlin scored 16 points while Lindsey finished the contest with 13 points. Daniel Holland and Jonathan Abts scored six points each.

Springville coach Jeff Smith said it was a huge area win.

“We did not shoot the ball well but rebounding and hitting free throws down the stretch was a big key,” Smith said.

Leading the Blue Devils was Bret Owens with 17 points. Malik Major pumped in 16 points while Brandon Adair netted 11 points. Marcus Hutchins totaled seven points while Bradley Seals had three points. Nick Talley had a single free throw.

Hewitt-Trussville 64, Springville 51

Before beating Moody, the Tigers lost to the Hewitt-Trussville Huskies 64-51.

Hewitt-Trussville was up 16-9 after the first quarter, 30-18 at halftime and 50-35 after three quarters of play. The final score was 64-51.

McLaughlin was Springville’s leading scorer with 25 points. Gino Baker scored nine points while Tremble netted seven points. Charlie Smith chipped in six points.

Leeds 66, SCCHS 52 (B)

After losing to Moody in an overtime heartbreaker, the Saints lost to Leeds 66-52. The Green Wave was up 25-15 after the first quarter and 38-25 at intermission. SCCHS was unable to catch up in the second half losing 66-52.

Miller led the Saints with 14 points while Brown pumped in 13 points.
