Shocco Springs’ Matt Cowart said 75 people have already registered for the 5K while there are five children signed up to participate in the 1-mile fun run. Cowart said runners who participated in the inaugural event a year ago liked the challenging nature of the course. The 5K course takes runners and walkers through the Shocco Springs campus and features several hills that make the event a little tougher than other races in the region.
The challenging nature of the course inspired one runner to continue competing after participating in the first race at Shocco.
“Dashing Through the Springs was the first 5K that I had ever run,” said Talladega resident Allison Miles. “This event inspired me to continue running. Since then, I have run in eight other races, and the Shocco race is by far my favorite. The hills are brutal, but for every hill you go up, that is one hill you get to dash down.”
Nathan Roddy, 15, won the inaugural event in 2009, posting a time of 23:08. The first female to cross the finish line was Anne Davis, 36, who completed the course in 25:51.
Registration for the event is available online through the Shocco Springs website, www.shocco.org, and vendor space and sponsorships are available. Race day registration is available beginning at 7 a.m. on Dec. 11. The 5K begins at 8 a.m. and the kids run starts at 9 a.m. Awards will be given out at 10 a.m.
Proceeds from the event benefit Shocco’s mission work, such as trips to Guatemala as well as helping on the Gulf Coast and at various points in East Alabama.
