HARPERSVILLE — Coosa Valley Academy’s Jordan Green signed a scholarship to play football at Faulkner University on Tuesday afternoon at the high school.

Green said he almost signed with Huntingdon before changing his mind.

“I decided to visit them both one more time,” he said. “The atmosphere at Faulkner, I had a gut feeling that’s where I needed to be. The coach told me I have a chance to be something special. If I work my butt off and get right there in the mix, I can get in the rotation for the defensive line and get after it.”

After playing football at Childersburg, Green decided to transfer to CVA for his senior year. Aside from playing basketball, he helped the Rebels win the AISA Class A football championship in 2010.

“Me and most of my buddies from Childersburg decided since its our last year we wanted to go out with a bang,” he said. “We decided to come out here. We worked super hard and it paid off — we got a ring. The season was just magical. It was awesome. The best time of my life.”

CVA head football coach Bobby Hughes was on hand Tuesday for the signing. He said Green was a big addition to the team last season.

“He was a big plus for us, because of his size and foot speed,” Hughes said. “He helped us a lot on the defensive and offensive line. He was one of our shutdown guys that made plays left and right. Without him we wouldn’t have won the state championship because he was a big part of it.”

Linebackers coach Dean Briggs represented Faulkner at the signing, as the head coach was

unable to come.

“The biggest thing about Jordan is he’s a good student,” Briggs said. “He’s a good citizen, has great character and comes from a great family. That’s what we look for. We’re a Christian school and we look first for the character and then the athlete, and I think we’re getting both in Jordan. The puzzle seemed to fit.”

Briggs said he thinks Green has a chance to start his freshman year for Faulkner.

“I’m expecting him, in his position, to come and compete hard for that particular defensive line job,” Briggs said. “He’s got a very good chance to come in and play.”

Green said he is looking forward to playing in college, but he’ll miss CVA.

“I’m going to miss being with all my friends that I’ve been playing football with since I was eight,” he said. “It’s a small community.”

Hughes, who lives in Montgomery, said he thinks Green will transition well to Faulkner.

“It’s a good fit for him coming from a small school here,” Hughes said. “He’s going to get bigger and he’ll bring a lot more size to their defensive line. As a freshman he’ll put on 30 pounds and by the time he’s a senior he’ll be huge.”
