Talladega County Coroner Shaddix Murphy identified the victim as Jerome Garrett, 31, of Sylacauga.
Murphy said Garrett died from a single gunshot wound to the neck.
Talladega County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Jimmy Kilgore said the victim apparently fled from the back door of his residence on Tuscaloosa Avenue after being shot. The victim collapsed on Central Avenue, which intersects Tuscaloosa Avenue.
Kilgore said the shooting was reported at about 2:30 a.m.
Murphy said Garrett was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:55 a.m., Saturday.
Kilgore said neighbors heard gunshots, and witnesses saw a suspect flee the front entrance of the residence, getting into an awaiting vehicle.
“There was some type of altercation inside the residence,” Kilgore said.
He said central dispatched received an emergency call about 2:30 a.m., from a group of juveniles.
“They said a male subject was lying in the road,” Kilgore said.
He said when deputies arrived at the scene they found the victim.
Kilgore said authorities believed the suspect was wounded in the altercation.
“There was a good bit of blood outside, where the suspect got into a vehicle,” Kilgore said.
He said authorities do not have a description of the suspect or the vehicle, except that the suspect was described as a black male.
“Our investigators are working around the clock on this,” Kilgore said.
He said anyone with information about the shooting or suspect should contact the Talladega County Sheriff’s Department at 256-362-6117 or 256-249-3811.
