Oak Grove Fire Chief Robert Osbourn knew what he was doing when he ordered the town’s new 2,000-gallon pumper truck, and he knew he’d made the right call on the truck’s first run.

The town took delivery of its new fire truck on June 22, and a half-hour later the truck was on its way to Sylacauga to help put out the blaze at Avondale Mills. It’s small as fire trucks go, and that worked to its advantage navigating around obstacles in the mill yard. It could go where larger trucks could not.

Osbourn said he chose the smaller truck because it could get through winding rural roads and turn into driveways more easily than a full-size pumper.

Osbourn was pleased with how the truck performed in its trial by fire. “With this truck, I can sleep better at night and not worry about the other firefighters not having what they need,” he said.
