SYLACAUGA — The City Schools Board of Education unanimously approved the contract for the construction of the new wing on the south lawn at Sylacauga High School.

The winning bid was submitted by First Team Construction, at a cost of $7.824 million. Maintenance supervisor Johnny Gray said the initial cost estimate was around $8.5 million.

Board member Tracey Allen asked Gray if the company had a good reputation. Gray said they had done several construction projects of similar size and nature to the high school addition.

“They just got finished with the Coosa County gym,” he said.

Gray added he was confident in the submitted sub-contractors as well. Gray estimated contract approval within 4-6 weeks, with groundbreaking coming as soon as October.

The two-story and approximately 55,000 square foot addition was designed with 26 classrooms, including Career Technology classrooms and science suites.

Board member Skip Smithwick said another of the school system’s projects, the construction of the gym at Pinecrest, was moving along well. Gray also said the new track at Legion Stadium was nearing completion.

Other business:

• The board approved the job description for the new position of school webmaster, 5-0.

• Mike Robinson was named the Sylacauga High School girls’ soccer team coach.

• The board approved payment of $488,375 for accounts payable and $1,411,368 for payroll in July, 5-0.

• The board scheduled budget hearings for 4 p.m. Sept. 1 and 5:30 p.m. Sept. 8.
