SYLACAUGA — During the holidays, Angel Trees are a popular way to help out families and children who are in need. This holiday season, the Sylacauga High School PTO is adopting that same idea for teachers.

“There is no money for teachers as far as the budgets go,” PTO president Tiffany Steers said.

During their monthly PTO meeting in November, members were discussing the needs of the teachers. They decided they wanted to provide the teachers with money for their individual classroom supplies due to funding and budget cuts. However, the PTO budget lacked the funds.

PTO member Vanessa McGee suggested doing a Teacher Angel Tree. Gina Redmond, a PTO member, volunteered to buy a pre-lit tree and make the angel ornaments. The Teacher Angel Tree is on display in the school library. Steers said several individuals are already adopting teachers.

Each teacher has an angel with his or her name on it. On the back of the angel is a pocket with slips of paper listing each item the teacher needs.

Steers said each student, parent or community member can choose from one to as many items as they would like to purchase for their chosen teacher. A form is provided so the teacher’s name and the items chosen can be recorded.

The donated items for the adopted teachers should be given by Friday, Dec.16.
