Through an initiative supported by the museum’s governing body, the Talladega Heritage Commission, Moorehead is working his way through the city’s elementary schools teaching art in a system unable to fund an art program on its own.
Salter Elementary School principal Jenni Griffin said Moorehead’s teaching was something the children enjoyed and it is also a “real self-esteem builder.”
Moorehead keeps his lessons moving, making them fun and sometimes funny, whether he is encouraging students to try their own innovative approaches to colors or encouraging creative thinking through caricatures.
It’s said that the mind, once expanded to the dimensions of larger ideas, never returns to its original size. Especially for younger children, art education is a mind-expanding tool that can make a lifelong impression on them.
It’s great to see the Heritage Commission and Moorehead get involved in bringing art to the students to help them learn to see their world in new ways.
