The free event is from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Central Park. It will feature carnival-themed activities, including a bounce house, dunking booth, tattoo parlor, face painting station, ice cream parlor and much more.
“We’ve really got a well-planned day,” said Arc director Beverly White. “We encourage everybody to come and bring your children and have a great time.”
There will also be a Mother’s Day plant sale and gift basket and bake sales.
“We have some beautiful plants and baskets,” White said. “The plants were very popular when we had a sale last year.”
There will be $1 tickets for the giveaway of gift baskets and also $100 tickets for a chance to win $10,000.
There will also be live music throughout the day from local bands, church groups and schools.
White said they are excited to bring back the family friendly event, which was last held on its 25th anniversary in 2000.
“Sunshine Saturday was always a popular event,” White said. “We have had so many people tell us they are glad it’s back. A lot of people in our community went when they were young, and now they want their children and grandchildren to have those same experiences.”
White said The Arc wants to make Sunshine Saturday a day of community involvement.
“We have a lot of groups involved already,” White said. “Different clubs and organizations are manning our booths, so instead of us at The Arc getting people to come, each group is gathering their own crowd, drawing from different areas in the community.”
The Arc decided to bring the event back to help fill the hole left by state and local budget cuts, White said.
“We have had so many cuts from all funding sources,” White said. “As everybody else, we are trying to recuperate some of the money we lost, and 2013 doesn’t look like an easy year for organizations like The Arc either. We’re just trying to keep our doors open.”
If this year goes well, White said they would like to make Sunshine Saturday an annual event once again.
“We’re testing the waters, but hoping for a great turnout,” she said. “It’s really going to be a lot of fun.”
