The Lady Wolves were rewarded for their efforts as they landed both top honors and six players on the 2012 Class 1-3A All-Talladega County Softball team. Fayetteville’s Hailey Haynes was named The Daily Home Player of the Year in and James Sherbertt took Coach of the Year honors.
Haynes’s player of the year nod is her second in as many years despite just being a freshman.
“ She is a very solid, athletic talented ball player,” Sherbertt said.” She has the potential of being the best player that I have ever coached. She has that raw God-given ability. I would to just sit down and watch her. Hopefully, she will stay hungry, humble and develop into the ball player I know she can be.”
Mandolin Parrett is the lone senior to earn All-County honors for Fayetteville. This season, she struggled at times, but when her team needed her most, she stepped up. Parrett led Fayetteville out the loser’s bracket to be the runner-up in the Class 1A Central Regional Tournament.
“I am proud of every one of the girls that made the team,” Sherbertt said. “You have to give the kudos to Mandolin Parrett our senior. She really had some adversity through the year, but she was able to face adversity head on. She strived, and she worked hard to get better. She really came through for us in our run at Troy, as well as going down to state. I can’t say enough about her and her ability to work through that adversity.”
Brittany Snyder and Peyton Dennis earned a spot on the All-County team. Dennis earned Defensive Player of the Year for the Lady Wolves.
“Snyder is a good all-around player for us,” Sherbertt said. “ Peyton Dennis is the catcher for us. She was our Defensive Player of the Year. Last year, we really had to work on pass balls. I charted them every game, but this year, I didn’t have to worry about charting pass balls, because there were hardly any of them. She made tremendous improvement behind the plate. She picked off several that were trying to get a little too much this year. Last year, she probably just threw out a couple. This year, if you got off a little too much she was going to make you pay. “
Courtney Deloach and Hayden Hughes also earned All-County honors.
“Courtney Deloach is a very solid defensive player for us in the ball field,” Sherbertt said. “In the outfield she turned doubles in to out. She also played some infield for us and did great with the bat as well. Her and Hailey was our Co-Offensive Player of the Year.
Hayden Hughes also earned All-County honors.
“She came in and played many different positions for us,” Sherbert said. “She was a really good pitcher for us. A lot of time she was our No.1 when Mandolin was struggling. We had to rely on her to come in and throw strikes for us until Mandolin could get back into here groove. We really counted on her and she came through for us.”
For the third straight season, Sherbertt earned Coach of the Year honors. He gives all the credit to his players and his assistant.
“It is really a reward for the girls,” Sherbert said. “It is what the girls do and what my assistant coaches do. I have several coaches; I have Coach Wilkerson that works with our pitchers. I have a couple of volunteer coaches: Arby Hammonds, Bryan Hughes and Mike Guy. They have come in and helped us. We couldn’t be as near successful without those guys coming in to help us. They don’t only help with the varsity, but they help with junior varsity as well. The come roll us their sleeves up and do everything that I ask them to do. It is really a reward for what the girls’ accomplished, not what I have accomplished. All I do is put a name on a roster and they went out there and did it.”
The B.B. Comer Lady Tigers had four players to earn All-County honors: Ashley Ogle, Keyana Kirksey, Laura Machen and Jada Hutchinson.
The Lady Bulldogs of Winterboro had three players to earn All-County honors: Jasmine Richardson. Jamie Duncan and Katie Roach.
TC Central saw some improvement this season in the win column. The Lady Fighting Tigers had three players named to the All-County team: Tierial Duncan, Destinee Garrett and Curteria Collins.
The coaches chose the players that were selected for the 2012 All-Talladega County Softball team.
