The school won the “VersaTiles” Success Factor Contest, designed to spotlight how VersaTiles, a system of puzzles that assist with math education, support student learning.
Participating schools were asked to submit a video showing how the product is used in the classroom. Pinecrest’s video submission, “Pinecrest is Versatile with VersaTiles!”, came from Pamela Roberts’ fourth-grade class.
The school will receive VersaTiles for one classroom and a math fundamentals online course, each valued at $2,000.
“We are so excited about winning and look forward to receiving the VersaTiles math materials,” Roberts said. “We appreciate the students, teachers and our friends on Facebook who took the time to vote for us.”
Following video submissions, all contest entrants were encouraged to share their videos to social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and solicit votes from friends, family, students and parents. The 20 entrants with the highest number of votes qualified to have their entries judged by a panel comprised of six educational leaders and ETA hand2mind customers.
Jude Rake, president of ETA hand2mind, the company that makes VersaTiles, said the contest was “an energizing and fulfilling experience for many people.”
“We're inspired by the creativity of the entrants and their compelling stories,” Rake said. “They reflect why we are devoted to hands-on learning solutions – that VersaTiles and learning tools like them are proven resources for engaging students and helping teachers create a successful environment in all types of classroom settings.”
In addition to her fourth-grade students, Roberts singled out others who helped on the project: Ethan Earley, fifth-grade student, who edited the video; Beth Patterson, fourth-grade teacher featured in the video; and Lakeisha Crocker, who helped direct the video.
First place went to Pin Oak Middle School in Bellaire, Texas. Fourteen other school placed as well.
