Over the past four seasons, the Munford Lady Lions have been the model for consistency.

The Lady Lions have won 20 games plus games for the past four seasons and earned a spot in the Regional Tournament in three out of the four years.

This season, the Lady Lions used ‘One Big Day’ to win the Class 4A Area 9 tournament to give them 20 wins. The area title also earned them a spot in the Regional Tournament.

For their great season, the Lady Lions lead the 4A-5A All Talladega County Softball team with five players including Player of the Year Jessica Butterworth and Coach of the Year Darrell Smith.

The Lady Lions have four seniors that earned All-County honors and have won over 80 games in their career.

Jessica Butterworth earned The Daily Home Player of the Year honor. The Southern Union signee played a major role in the Lady Lions success on defense at shortstop. The senior also found a way to get on base and score runs from the lead off spot of the lineup.

“She is one of those players that makes plays,” Munford head coach Darrell Smith said. “She has led our team defensively the past two seasons. She has the mobility and the arm strength that not too many players in high school have. Her ability to manufacture runs at the plate was key factor in our success the last few years. Being the competitor that she is, she would find a way to get on base and score runs. We are going to miss having her in our lineup next year.”

Munford slugger, Tashayla Turner had a stellar season at the plate. The Class 4A Area 9 tournament MVP was seventh in the state in homeruns with 10 this season. She was also 17th in state in RBI’s with 42.

The Lady Lions had four vital pieces of their team to earn All-County honors: Savanna Macoy, Kiera Groce, Laural Browning and Holly Ponder.

For Smith this is his second time winning 4A-5A Coach of the Year honors.

“I feel honored to win it, because the county has a lot of good coaches and players,” Smith said. “It is just shows if you surround yourself with good people you will be successful in whatever you do. We have a good program here at Munford and we are looking forward to the next few years. We have a great group of young people coming up. I am truly blessed to be part of this program.

The 2012 Talladega County Softball Tournament champions the Childersburg Lady Tigers had two players to make the All-County team: Breanna Garrett and Chelsea Mowery.

The Sylacauga Lady Aggies season didn’t go as planned as they went 11-18 and missed the postseason. Olivia Harmon’s team had seven players to get All-County honors: Jamara Thomas, Jan Thomas, Carvanna Smith, Ashyton Carroll, Emily Gormon, Shayla Downing and Alicia Gauker.

The Lady Tigers of Talladega had two players to earn All-County honors: Kerri Green and Chareese Jordan.

The Lincoln Lady Golden Bears only had one player to earn All-County honors. Brandy Decker led the Lady Golden Bears with .453 on base percentage and she posted a .412 batting average.

The coaches chose players selected for the 2012 All Talladega County softball team.
