SYLACAUGA — Things are heating up for the Sylacauga Fire Department this week.

The department is getting some real-world training with a Live Fire Training trailer provided by the Alabama Fire College.

The trailer, set up in the Sylacauga High School parking lot, allows firefighters to simulate a variety of interior fire scenarios using propane-fueled fire and smoke created by a smoke machine.

“The trailer is a really good tool for us to put our training to the test,” Fire Chief Matt Missildine said. “It’s an opportunity we don’t have all the time, so we’re glad to be taking advantage of it.”

The AFC travels around the state with the trailer and provides it upon request from a fire department. The simulated conditions allow firefighters to practice skills like search and rescue, advancing the hose line, wearing personal protection equipment, working with a breathing apparatus and more.

Missildine said the simulated conditions add a new level to the training firefighters participate in throughout the year.

“We practice these skills all the time, but we’re not able to do it under these conditions,” he said. “So this is a validation of our training, but also a form of training in itself.”

Tonight is their last night in the trailer. Missildine said the public is welcome to stop by and watch from 6-9 p.m., but will not be allowed in the trailer.
