The first day of qualifying was held Tuesday in cities across Talladega and St. Clair counties.
Municipal candidates, those seeking office for mayor, on councils and school boards have until 5 p.m. July 17, the third Tuesday of the month, to qualify for 2012 municipal election. Municipal elections are slated for Aug. 28, with the run-off date set for Oct. 9, if a run-off is necessary.
The city of Talladega held municipal elections last year.
Newly elected officials will take office in November.
Following is a look at the way the 2012 elections are shaping up after the first day of qualifying.
PELL CITY
Although there are signs scattered throughout town, nobody qualified for mayor on the first day of qualifying.
Adam Stocks and Ren Wheeler have political signs up around the city saying they are seeking the top election spot, but neither qualified to run for mayor Tuesday.
Current Mayor Bill Hereford has repeatedly said he will only serve one term as mayor.
Councilman Donnie Todd, who currently represents Council District 4, said he will not seek another term.
Council members Dot Wood and James McGowan are seeking re-election to the council.
There were no candidates to qualify for the District 1 council seat, which remains vacant after former Councilman Greg Gossett resigned last week to become the city’s street superintendent.
No candidates qualified for Pell City Board of Education Districts 2-3 Tuesday. Current board members David Murphy, District 1, and Dr. Eric Hicks, District 3, both said they will not seek another term on the school board. Brittney Smith qualified Tuesday for the District 1 school board seat.
Board of Education member Cecil Fomby did not qualify Tuesday for the District 2 spot.
Current school board members Tammie Williams and Norman Wilder are seeking spots on the board and qualified Tuesday. Williams was voted onto the board after board member Mike Price died unexpectedly in May 2011. Wilder is seeking his fourth term on the board.

Council District 1: None
Council District 2: James McGowan
Council District 3: Dot Wood
Council District 4: Wallace Bromberg, Greg Jacobik and Sharon Thomas
Council District 5: Philip Roberson
School Board District 1: Brittney Smith
School Board District 2: None
School Board District 3: None
School Board District 4: Tammie Williams
School Board District 5: Norman Wilder
RIVERSIDE
The current mayor and two council members qualified for re-election Tuesday.
Mayor Rusty Jessup was the only candidate to qualify for mayor Tuesday.
Current Councilwoman Rachelle Painter qualified to continue representing District 2, and Frank Riddle also qualified for District 2.
Current Councilman Bill Cantley, who was appointed to represent District 3 last November to fill a vacancy on the council, qualified to continue representing his district.
Current Councilman Jimmy Hollander, who represents District 1, announced he will seek re-election but had not qualified Tuesday.
Current Councilmen Rob Hayes and Kenny Womack, who represent Districts 4 and 5 respectively, have not said if they will seek re-election and neither qualified Tuesday. No one else qualified to represent Districts 4 or 5 Tuesday.

LINCOLN
The three candidates whose campaign signs have dotted Lincoln for weeks qualified for the office of mayor Tuesday — Kelly Love and current Councilmen Bud Kitchin and Chris Watson.
Current Mayor Lew Watson announced he will not seek re-election.
Current Councilman Billy Pearson has qualified to continue representing Ward 2.
Ward 3 will have a new representative since current Councilman Chris Watson is seeking the mayoral office. Gwen Barber and Jay Watson, Chris Watson’s brother, have qualified to represent Ward 3.
Current Councilman Kurt Kuykendall and Myles Christian qualified for the Ward 4 race.
Former Councilwoman Jean Burk has qualified to represent Ward 5.

District 2: Manuell Smith III, Shannon Darby
District 3: Kenneth E. Horn
District 4: Jonathan D. Hall
District 5: Billy Hay
OAK GROVE
Mayor Charles Merkel was the only candidate to qualify for mayor Tuesday.
Qualifying for council seats are:
Place 1: James C. Armstrong
Place 2: Tony A. White
Place 4: David A. Harris
Place 5: Donald Coleman.
CHILDERSBURG
The only person to qualify in Childersburg Tuesday was Ralph Rich, who is seeking the Ward E council seat.
