The Lady Purple Devils skipper is one of the two coaches for the North team in the 16th annual Alabama High School Athletic Association All-Star Week in Montgomery.
Nix and the North team take on the South team tonight at
6 p.m. at Lagoon Park softball complex.
Lagoon Park has been a special place for Nix the past three seasons.
“I am back at home and it is a good place to be,” Nix said. “It does feel like home. It has been home for the last three years.”
For the Lady Purple Devils coach, this is his first time coaching in the North-South All-Star team.
“I am very excited about,” Nix said. “I am excited to be down here and have the opportunity. I am really honored. Coach Palmer from Sparkman and I are good coaches. I am just excited to be down here in their company.”
Nix said he found out he was going to be one of the coaches on the All-Star team not too long after winning his third title.
“We found out right before school got out,” Nix said Monday. “I think it was announced in the middle of May or toward the end of May. We just got down here today to check in and meet the girls. We just got through with our first practice. Then tomorrow we are taking them to a combine and the game is tomorrow night.”
St. Clair County is well represented on the North team with Tanner Earley from Springville and Katie Brown from Moody.
“I am looking forward to see the best that the state has to offer in the junior class,” Nix said. “I think our North squad has a very good team. We have some very talented girls on the team. Emily Church was on there last year, so I am glad to see her on there from our county (St. Clair). This year, there is a girl on there from Moody and Springville. I am glad to see our county really striving toward that. Having girls on here every year to make these elite teams. There are 16 girls that make it on the North and 16 on the South.”
The North has a commanding 21-6-1 record against the South team. Nix said he plans for that dominance to continue tonight. The North won the first game of the double-header last year 6-3, and the second game of the doubleheader ended in a 3-3 tie.
“We are here to win and that is what we told the girls in the meeting,” Nix said.
“We told them that we didn’t come here to lose and they showed that at practice. It is fun to work with Coach Palmer of Sparkman knowing what he accomplished at that program. You have one of the largest schools in the state paired with a coach of one of the smallest schools in the state. We were really gelling good together and both of us want to win. We both believe in fundamentals and hard work. I am excited about the honor.”
