St. Clair County Presiding Circuit Court Judge Jim Hill set the trial date for Roger Gladney, 39, for Nov. 5 with a plea day Oct. 29.
Gladney was indicted for the Oct. 28, 2011 murder of his girlfriend, Betty Jean Cannon, 43, of Rainbow City.
St. Clair County Assistant District Attorney Carol Boone said in court Wednesday that Gladney’s attorney, James “Peter” Finley, had requested a mental evaluation for his client.
“The mental evaluation found that Mr. Gladney is competent to stand trial, and that he was competent at the time of the murder,” she said.
At the time of Gladney’s arrest in October 2011, authorities said the couple were drinking and apparently got into an argument. Cannon was in bed when Gladney allegedly shot her once in the head with a .40 caliber handgun.
The suspect allegedly admitted shooting his girlfriend, who lived at the residence for about three years.
The victim was transported to Gadsden Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by the attending emergency room physician.
