RIVERSIDE — Authorities arrested a man Friday for allegedly murdering his cousin.

St. Clair County Sheriff Terry Surles said Jeffery Wayne Finney Jr., 30, of Riverside was arrested for the murder of his cousin, Rickey Shane Williams, 34, of Riverside.

He said authorities suspect the victim was tied to a vehicle and dragged.

Deputy Coroner Jeremiah Gilreath said the victim was found outside his residence at the 2600 block of Sprayberry Road.

“The cause of death is still under investigation,” Gilreath said. “It is also being investigated as a homicide by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department.”

Gilreath said he pronounced the victim dead at the scene at 1:35 p.m. Thursday.

He said the victim was found by a relative.

Gilreath said the victim’s body was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville for an autopsy.

Finney was captured by authorities in Pell City Friday afternoon.

“We were there to help out if they needed us,” Pell City Police Chief Greg Turley said.

The suspect was apprehended off Martin Street South, near the Pell City Market Place where Kmart is located.

“The Sheriff’s Office did a tremendous job, with good results,” Turley said.

Riverside Police Chief Rick Oliver, who also works as a narcotics investigator for the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department, said authorities captured the suspect in a wooded area adjacent to the Pell City Market Place shopping center.

“The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department assisted us with the death investigation,” Oliver said.

He said authorities are still not sure why Finney allegedly killed his cousin, but the suspect remains in the St. Clair County Jail in Pell City without bond.

“It’s still under investigation,” Oliver said. “If anyone gave him a ride, we want to talk to them.”

He said authorities are still looking for the suspect’s vehicle, a green 1991 Cadillac Seville.

“I anticipate he (Finney) will appear before Judge (Alan) Furr on Monday morning for his initial appearance,” District Attorney Richard Minor said. “He is charged with one count of murder.”

Talladega County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Jimmy Kilgore said his investigators were contacted by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department and notified the suspect was possibly in the Renfroe area of Talladega County.

“My folks went out and attempted to locate him,” Kilgore said. “We never made contact. We later learned he was captured (in Pell City).”

Oliver said if anyone has information about the whereabouts of Finney’s vehicle to contact him or Sheriff Terry Surles by calling St. Clair County Central Dispatch at 205-884-3333.
