“It is a big win in the county tournament and it is our first win of the year,” Talladega head coach John Hill said. “We struggled defensively early on in the season, we still had some mistakes tonight, but we did better overall. Zach Spratlin pitched four great innings and we struggled a little bit in the fifth. Brandon Smith, a 10th grader came on and threw a heck of an end of the game. He is tough, he is confident, and he is not afraid to go in a bad situation. We hit the ball well and we ran the bases well besides a few hiccups. It is big for them momentum-wise right now. We needed this win.”
Talladega and Munford went into the seventh inning tied at 6-6. Talladega pitcher Brandon Smith struck out the side in the top of the inning to set up a dramatic finish. With two outs and runners on the corners, Munford pitcher Tranas Patterson threw a wild pitch that allowed Waylon Lett to score the game-winning run.
“That was a heads up play,” Hill said. “He paid attention and he was there when he needed to be.”
Talladega got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Matt Bishop hit a double to right center field to score Barrett Hutto from second base to make it 1-0.
An error by Munford pitcher in the bottom of the second inning allowed Richard Williams and Brandon Smith to score to increase Talladega’s lead 3-0.
In the third inning, Zach Spratlin hit a single to score Bishop and Austin Shiflett to increase the Tigers lead to 5-0.
The Lions finally got on the board in the fourth inning. CJ Chapman hit a RBI single to make it 5-1.
Munford got back into the game in the fifth inning. With runners on second and third, Talladega pitcher Zach Spratlin was called for a balk, which allowed a Munford runner to score to make it 6-2. With the bases loaded, Chapman walked which allowed a runner to score from third to make it 6-3. Tyler Mayo drove in two runs to cut the Talladega lead to 6-5. An error on the shortstop on a hit by Logan Kirk allowed Chapman to cross home plate and tied the game at 6-6.
Brandon Smith earned the win off the mound for Talladega. He pitched three innings allowed two runs, two hits and struck out three batters.
Patterson earned the loss for Munford.
