HeritageBank of the South, which replaced the former Frontier Bank locations in Sylacauga and Childersburg earlier this month, announced it is offering $500 college scholarships to high school students in its service area.
Five scholarships, one per service region, will be awarded, along with one to a dependent of a HeritageBank employee. The Alabama and West Georgia service region is open to students in Talladega, St. Clair, Shelby, Lee, Troup and Chambers counties.
“Knowledge is powerful,” Marketing Director Mary Beth Hobby said. “A college degree can open doors to new opportunities and career advancements. It’s no secret college graduates are more likely to make more money and own a home. I have found they are more likely to be actively involved in their communities as well.”
The bank offers the scholarships in an effort to assist with the cost of higher education, which increases at a rate of about 7 percent a year, as stated in a press release from the bank. The scholarships are also intended to encourage students to stay involved in their community.
“At HeritageBank of the South, community involvement isn’t something we say; it’s something we do,” Hobby said. “Community service is required of every employee and is a large part of this scholarship too. Applicants must demonstrate a high degree of commitment to their community as well as their education.”
Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or higher and will be asked to describe their participation in the community. Also included in the application, students must write an original essay about why their hometown is a great place to live.
All applications are due to the HeritageBank Marketing Department, located at 721 N. Westover Boulevard, Albany, Ga. 31707, by close of business on May 10. Applications and details are available online at www.eheritagebank.com.
Other service regions include Central and Southwest Georgia, Southern (includes Georgia and Florida areas), East Georgia and Southwest Georgia.
HeritageBank of the South acquired Frontier Bank’s nine branches on March 8 after Frontier was closed by the Georgia Department of Banking and Finance. HeritageBank has 29 full-service branches throughout Georgia, Florida and Alabama. As of December, 31, 2012, the company reported total assets of about $1.1 billion.
