SYLACAUGA — The Coosa Valley Medical Center Fitness and Wellness Center is now in good shape to help you get in shape.

The hospital reacquired the facility from its previous owner April 1 and promptly closed it for two weeks to complete significant and needed renovations.

“CVMC as a whole wants to put an emphasis on wellness,” said Chief Human Resources Officer Christy Knowles. “We are certainly privileged when people choose us when they are sick, but we also want people to think of us when they are trying to stay well.”

The gym, located on South Mobile Avenue, reopened April 15 with new paint, flooring and bathroom improvements, as well as some new equipment.

“We added some cardio equipment that is all within five years old to increase the focus on cardio, which the layout of the gym shows,” said Facilities Director Keith Knox. “We also moved all of the free weights and weight equipment to the same room and reopened the two racquetball courts.”

CVMC worked with Atlanta-based consultants Excellence in Exercise to assist with technology and design. The cardio equipment now faces one wall with two mounted flat-screen TVs and weight equipment is arranged on the other half of the room, also with a TV. An indoor walking track surrounds two racquetball courts that may also be used for exercise classes. More classrooms are upstairs. Existing exercise classes will continue to be offered, including yoga, Zumba, kickboxing, step aerobics and others.

Some conveniences have also been added. The fitness center now supplies linens and toiletries and has created a private orientation room so new members don’t have to weigh in front of other gym-goers. In addition, the facility will be staffed at all times, and operating hours have changed from 24/7 access. Hours are now from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

“Those are just some of the little things members will be happy about,” Knox said.

CVMC CEO Glenn Sisk said the improved facility is essential in accomplishing the hospital’s goals.

“We were extremely pleased to reacquire the Fitness & Wellness Center,” Sisk said. “While CVMC has continually existed to address the health concerns of area residents, we remain equally committed to improving health in the region through exercise, diet and healthy lifestyle choices. The Fitness & Wellness Center will assist CVMC in this vitally important journey.”

With a new “Be Active, Live Well” slogan, Knowles said that is just what the hospital wants for the community.

“We welcome feedback and are always looking for opportunities to improve,” she said. “We want it to be a gym the community is proud of and wants to be a part of.”
