Newell Road Builders of Hope Hull submitted the lowest responsible bid of $9.4 million.
The bid comes in at more than 15 percent above the original estimated cost of the project given by Robert Camp, assistant division engineer for ALDOT Fourth Division, during a discussion with county officials at the Talladega County Emergency Management Agency training room June 20.
According to ALDOT employee Tony Harris, Gov. Robert Bentley has not officially signed the contract and the start date of the project has not been determined. Harris estimated the project would begin the first week of August.
Terms of the contract state Newell Road Builders must complete the project within 45 calendar days while ensuring the highway remains closed for no more than 21 calendar days.
Harris speculated the first 21 days of the project would be spent working on the road itself so the three-week deadline for reopening could be met. Once the road reopens, the contractors would use the additional 24 days for shoulder and median work, paving and striping the highway.
“During the duration of the road closure, the contractors are required to work 24/7,” Harris said. “Once the road reopens, it is at the contractor’s discretion whether or not to continue working 24/7.”
