St. Clair County Coroner Dennis Russell said Jammy Bell, 42, was pronounced dead at St. Vincent's St. Clair at 9:46 p.m. Sunday, the victim of "multiple stab wounds." The Alabama Department of Corrections said Monday that Bell sustained the wounds ”during an altercation with another inmate in Dormitory D."
"An officer responded to the unit and used a chemical agent to gain control of the inmates," the statement read in part.
The release stated that another inmate, Larry Evans Lowe, 34, is in custody as a suspect. Lowe is serving a 25-year sentence for murder in Jefferson County.
"Two inmate-made knives believed to have been used in the crime have been recovered," the statement said. "Consistent with ADOC policy, the circumstances surrounding Bell’s death are under investigation through the Department’s Investigation and Intelligence Division. An autopsy will be performed to determine the actual cause of death."
St. Clair County District Attorney Richard Minor said no one had been charged in the incident as of Monday afternoon.
"It is still under investigation, and we will await the report of the investigative department of the Department of Corrections," Minor said.
Bell, the victim, was serving a 35-year sentence out of Washington County for receiving stolen property, burglary and assault.
