The city will be accepting applications, both new and renewals, for individuals who qualify for the exemption. The exemption is provided to any head of a household, in whose name a utility meter is registered, according to either of the following criteria:
1. The person is over age 65 and the total combined monthly income of all individuals living in the residence is not more than $600 per month. In this case, the person shall pay a reduced collection fee of $3 per month.
2. The person is totally physically disabled to work and the total combined income of all individuals living in the residence is derived from Social Security benefits, supplemental security income or a combination of the two. This person is exempt from payment of collection fees.
Individuals meeting one or both of these requirements must complete a new application annually.
These exemptions apply only to household garbage fees and normal residential trash, refuse, yard and other waste collection fees, but do not apply to collection charges for additional loads or any other disposal charges.
Applications may be obtained from the City Clerk’s Office. Proof of income via a bank statement and a copy of a utility bill are required. Anyone with questions concerning exemptions may call 256-401-2401.
