According to Interim Police Chief Jason Busby, the 29-year-old homeowner was awakened just before 4 a.m. by the sound of his young daughters screaming and the smell of smoke. He was able to get the four girls, ages 4 through 10, out of the house himself and was attempting to put out the fire with a garden house when police and firefighters arrived.
Fire Capt. Ron Goodenough said the fire was out in about 5 minutes, but firefighters remained on the scene until after 9 a.m.
According to the written fire report, the blaze seemed to have sprung up in two of the home’s three bedrooms. Heavy smoke, fire and water damage to these rooms and the items in them were listed, with moderate to heavy damage to the rest of the house.
The initial cause of the fire or fires remained under investigation Monday afternoon.
