St. Clair County Assistant District Attorney Gwendolyn Connelly said Betty Wallace Smith, 61, was arrested in connection with the seizure of more than 80 dogs and cats from property off Woody Acres in Odenville in mid July.
“Odenville police officers received a report Friday morning that there were more animals at the residence,” Connelly said.
Odenville Police Chief Adam Pardue said officers found 13 dogs at the property.
“The dogs all seemed to be in pretty good condition, not like the last ones we found out there,” he said. “They looked to be in pretty good health and were all grown adult dogs.”
Pardue said the dogs were surrendered to the Animal Shelter of Pell City Inc., which came out and took all 13 dogs into custody Friday.
Connelly said the six charges of “cruelty to a dog or cat in the first degree” are Class C felonies, and if convicted are punishable by one year and one day to 10 years in prison. Further charges may be pending.
