In the first incident, a woman gave a man a ride to the Kymulga community, and he gave her $20. She learned the bill was fake when she went to the Kangaroo convenience store on U.S. 280 early Monday to get gas, Wesson said.
He said a manager found the second phony $20 early Tuesday in the same store’s cash receipts, but it was not immediately clear who passed that bill or when.
“We want to put the business owners on alert that some counterfeit has been passed around,” Wesson said. “I understand this guy has a handful of them.”
The bills bear the same serial number – JD06063759C.
Wesson’s office said the U.S. Secret Service has been notified of the case. Childersburg police continued to investigate Tuesday, but Wesson said he didn’t expect an arrest immediately.
Kangaroo store manager Justin Edwards gave credit to a sharp-eyed associate who was working overnight and discovered what was going on.
“It’s unfortunate that something like that would happen,” he said.
