This is the college’s first season to have a women’s soccer team, so it’s not as if the first win has been a long time in the making.
But the fact that the college even has a women’s soccer team is yet another sign of a rebirth of the institution. This year’s freshman class alone is larger than the college’s entire enrollment six years ago. That was at a time when sports teams were cut, enrollment was dropping, and there was serious speculation about whether the college would be closing its doors for good.
A new vision for the college, a new college president, and a new administration have reinstituted the former sports teams and added new ones, and even added a marching band, to bring new life, new opportunities and more than a thousand young people to campus.
The ladies’ soccer team is a racially and internationally diverse group of young women who have made a bit of history for the college, and who have come to live part of their lives in our community.
We congratulate them on their achievement and wish them well on the field, in the classroom, and in the years ahead.
