Police Chief Chris Carden said two citizens found the 3-year-old boy walking along Broadway Avenue in the area of Bay Street between 8 and 9 a.m. and brought him to the police station.
“He was able to tell us he was 3 years old, but he couldn’t tell us his name,” Carden said.
Police immediately began knocking on doors in the area, but had no luck finding the child’s home.
That’s when they decided to take the child’s picture and post it on the Police Department’s Facebook page.
“We almost immediately started getting calls from people who recognized the child or who knew the family,” Carden said. About that time, police also received a call from a man who was frantically looking for the little boy.
“He was watching the child, and while he was in the back of the house doing some work, the child wandered out of the house,” Carden said.
The man was babysitting while the child’s father worked out of town, Carden said. When police contacted the father, he hurried back to Sylacauga. Meanwhile, the Talladega County Department of Human Resources had taken custody of the little boy and taken him to their headquarters in Talladega, so Carden said the father then headed to Talladega to be reunited with his son.
“All indications are that the child just wandered off,” Carden said.
