Shocco mission trip a double blessing

It’s hard to know who got the bigger blessing out of a mission trip to Haiti made recently by Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center staff and summer staffers. A group of 17 went to an orphanage in Jacmel, Haiti. They brought Vacation Bible School to life for students, and had personal interaction not just with children at the orphanage, but kids — and some adults — from nearby.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, and offered Shocco team members not only an opportunity to minister to others, but also a chance to broaden their understanding of the human condition. One team member talked about the joy and happiness he saw in children who really had very little in terms of material possession. Another spoke of learning to make a conscious decision to love others.

The trips are part of Shocco’s mission to provide “a distinctly Christian environment for spiritual transformation and renewal,” a mission focused on visitors and staff alike. Shocco’s mission trips take that mission beyond Shocco’s boundaries in Talladega.

The dedication and commitment required for that kind of service to others — which also mean staffers pay their own way — is an inspiration.
