Investigator Donald Elkins said a Childersburg woman who had been walking at the track at Grove Park left her 1999 Ford Expedition in the parking lot at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. The car wasn’t running right, he said, so she walked home.
The car was found at 10:05 p.m. on 13th Street in the parking lot of Enon Baptist Church, fully involved in fire. It was a total loss.
Elkins said there were some loud pops or explosions as the car burned, and he later learned that there was respiration equipment including an oxygen tank in the car. The air bags may also have contributed to the popping sounds.
“The rumor was started that there was a body in the vehicle. There was no body,” Elkins said.
He said anyone with information about the vehicle theft is asked to call the department at 256-378-7860. Tips are kept confidential.
