According to Talladega Sheriff’s Department Capt. Bill Kennedy, the victim was a store clerk who had finished closing the store located at 39270 Alabama 21 shortly after 9:30 p.m. when he was approached by an individual wearing camouflage who shot him in the leg with a 12-guage slug.
The perpetrator, who faces first-degree robbery charges once apprehended, demanded and received an undisclosed amount of money from the victim, then ran off the property to a nearby pickup truck and fled the scene.
Kennedy said a witness reported the pickup truck appeared to be a dark color.
When police and emergency personnel arrived at the scene, the victim was unable to be interviewed about the incident due to his injuries.
“The victim was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham and underwent surgery,” Kennedy said. “If the robber had shot him in the gut, he would have died. We plan to go to the hospital tomorrow to obtain more information about this crime.”
The name of the victim is being withheld while the investigation continues.
