Board member Bonnie Miller, Charles Miller’s mother, abstained. Charles Miller had recently been appointed assistant principal at the high school.
Keith was previously assistant athletic director at the high school and a physical education teacher at Zora Ellis Junior High School. She will now be teaching PE at the high school.
Prior to taking up the personnel actions, the board spent a little over half an hour in executive session to discuss the good name and character of an individual, according to Chairwoman Shirley Simmons-Sims. Talladega High School Principal Darren Anglin was called into the session after about 20 minutes.
After the vote, Bonnie Miller said, “When an elected board makes decisions that are not in the best interest of students at Zora Ellis or at the high school, it is time for them to take inventory of their actions and their mission.”
Keith, who was present for the meeting, said she wanted to “thank the board for the opportunity to serve as athletic director. I’ve been teaching for 25 years, and I’ve had other opportunities. The principal at Childersburg called and asked me to coach basketball there. The president of Talladega College asked me to come there to coach basketball and softball. But I know this is where God wanted me, he placed me in this system. I have come here to do God’s work, to educate the children. My children went to school here and were both valedictorians. … You have placed a great responsibility on me, but at the same time you have put a burden on my heart. I love this system and the children in it. These children have come back to me and told me that they are better people because of me. I have taken these children home with me, fed them, paid for them to take the ACT. It’s not about me; it’s about the children.”
Keith went on to say that having an outstanding sports program could reduce disciplinary issues, increase enrollment and help students that may not excel in the classroom.
