“This race is part of a four-race series that will bring people from all over the Southeast to Lakeside Park,” said Erica Grieve, executive director of the Greater Pell City Chamber of Commerce.
The Metro Bank Team Magic CX event is Sunday, Oct. 27, at Lakeside Park. The “Cross Country” Style Run is at 8 a.m. The Cyclocross is at 10 a.m. Lunch is provided for the racers.
“Team Magic is a management agency out of Birmingham that has a large following,” Grieve said. “They will be build an off road course at the park with a few obstacles built in. Racers can run, bike or do both. This is not your normal 5K run. Also, getting our kids involved in healthy activities like this can make a huge difference in our community.”
Grieve said the race is an event for the entire family, with vendors, music, food and fun while attendees cheer the races on.
“There is a $10 discount if you register online before Oct. 24 at www.team-magic.com,” she said. “We will have pre-registration for the race from noon-3 p.m. Oct. 26 at Lakeside Park during Paws in the Park.”
Ofes Forman, committee chairman for the committee to promote races in Pell City, said they are starting with a smaller race and hope to grow from there.
“What we hope to accomplish with this race is to get Pell City started in the racing circuit for triathlons, duathlons and Ironman events,” he said. “Professional racers travel all over to attend these events. We want Pell City to be one of the locations to host annual races.”
Forman said there are 150-200 racers pre-registered.
“The local racers are more likely to register closer to the race date, which could add another 150 or so racers,” he said.
Grieve said hopefully some of the racers visiting Pell City for the first time will want to come back.
“We have hopes of building up to a triathlon if we can get the community to support and participate,” she said. “These types of races could bring in thousands of dollars in city revenue. We hope that our business community sees economic benefits from these types of events. The lake is Pell City’s greatest asset and we should market it to its full potential.”
Forman said attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets when they come out to enjoy the event.
“We also want to thank all our local sponsors for their support,” he said. “This would not be possible without them.”
