“The focus is on us getting better and finishing out these last two games,” Childersburg head coach Adam Fossett said. “The goal is to go 8-2 and we have talked all week about we can’t go 8-2 without going to 7-2. The next opponent is Holtville, it is a region opponent. We want to finish up strong in the region and win that last region game obviously. More important tomorrow is Senior Night, we want to send the senior out on the last home game in the regular season as winners. This group has been through some tough times and they have had a chance to have a good time over the last couple of years. They are committed to the team and they have bought in and done everything that we have asked. I definitely want them to go out as winner tomorrow night.”
The Tigers (6-2, 4-2) are coming off a 41-13 win over Dallas County to clinch the third seed in Class 4A Region 3. Fossett said his team had a decent week of preparation, but he said his players have mixed feeling about preparing to play in cold weather.
“It has been going pretty good,” Fossett said. “We had one bad day, but other than that we had a decent week of practice. The kids seem to be upbeat. Some are enjoying the cooler weather and some are saying it’s too cold. The cooler weather put pep in their step; it is nice to get some fall weather and football weather.”
Holtville enters tonight’s game looking to earn their second win of the season. The Bulldogs fell to Elmore County 28-13 last week.
“Offensively, they can give us a couple of different looks and they have good size on the offensive and defensive lines,” Fossett said. “It is going to be important for us to make sure we get pressure on them early and get in the back field and create havoc. We have to get our linebacker on the counter and traps. We just have to keep playing hard and keep playing discipline football. When we play discipline football and do what we are supposed to do on defense we are a pretty sultry group and play pretty well. Offensively, they are going to give us a couple of different fronts and they are going to come at us and try to stop us. Again we have to make sure that we are working on the running game and have a balanced attack with the run and the pass. We can’t be one dimensional especially going into the playoffs, we have to make sure we can run and throw the ball.”
Fossett believes if the Tigers can get off to a fast start and play solid defense the seniors will earn their seventh win of the season which has been accomplished since 1995.
“Take care of the ball no turnovers,” Fossett said.
“We would like to come out fast like we did last week and score early and often. Defensively, I would like to see us continue to pressure the quarterback and make sure we don’t allow any big plays. We need to take care of the business. “
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from John Cox Stadium in Childersburg.
