“They’re a really good football team,” CVA head coach Arlton Hudson. “They actually beat Restoration the first game of the year and they’ve only gotten better since then. I really haven’t found a weakness in any place I’ve looked at. They’re a really, really sound football team offensively, defensively, kicking game; they just don’t make mistakes.”
Bessemer’s only loss this season was to No. 3 Monroe Academy (8-0).
“It’s definitely going to be a test,” Hudson said. “As far as getting ready for anyone else, we can’t even think about that. We’ve got to try to be ready for them. Like I said, they’re the best football team I’ve seen on film all year long. They just do a really good job in everything they do. It’s going to be a challenge for us just to do what we can to stay in the game and make it interesting.”
CVA (5-4) had a solid week of practice. Hudson has tried to focus on getting his players healthy come playoff time.
“It’s been really good,” he said. “This time of the year, we shorten up practices to try to keep the kids fresh and keep their legs under them, try to get back well. We’ve still got a couple kids banged up. We just want to try to get well for the playoffs. I feel good about our chances when we get there. We just don’t want to take a chance of anyone getting hurt. We haven’t really done any full contact since probably the second or third week of the season during practice. It’s worked for us; we’ve only had a couple minor injuries. We’ll have a couple of kids out this week. Hopefully, we’ll have everybody well by the time the playoffs get here and just get prepared for that.”
CVA found out last weekend they will travel to Camden to play Wilcox Academy in the first round of the AISA playoffs. Hudson said at this point in the season, CVA has to worry less about individual opponents and worry more about how they play the game.
“I just want us to get better every week,” he said. “That’s been our goal so far all year long and I feel like we have. I don’t really feel like we’ve had a letdown week since we got started. It definitely isn’t time to do that now. I hope we reach our peak at the right time and I think we’re peaking right now at the right time. We’ve just got to try to carry that momentum to Friday night and the next couple weeks of the regular season and get into the playoffs against a real good Wilcox team.”
CVA will play at Bessemer Academy tonight at 7 p.m.
