PELL CITY – A Pell City man was found hung inside a jail cell at the St. Clair County Jail.

St. Clair County Coroner Dennis Russell identified the victim as Jeremy Baker, 28, of Pell City.

Russell said the cause of death was ruled as a hanging.

St. Clair County Sheriff Department Lt. Freddie Turrentine said Baker was found inside his jail cell late Friday.

Russell said Baker was transported to the St. Vincent’s St. Clair Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Turrentine said Baker was arrested by an officer with the Pell City Police Department about one week before the inmate’s death.

He said Baker was taken into custody for the failure to appear in court on a theft of property third-degree charge.

Turrentine said the inmate was being held in the St. Clair County Jail without bond, pending his court hearing.

Baker’s death is being investigated by the Alabama Bureau of Investigations.
