TALLADEGA COUNTY – Circuit Judge Bo Hollingsworth has sentenced a Sylacauga man to life in prison, according to District Attorney Steve Giddens.

Corry “Corleone” Averett, 33, was convicted of murder by a jury in September.

Averett was convicted of shooting Roscoe Desmond Anderson III to death in 2004. According to witnesses for the state, Averett worked for Anderson as a body guard, but decided to rob him when he felt he was not being paid in a timely fashion. Something went wrong during the robbery, and Anderson ended up dead. Two of the state’s witnesses were incarcerated in (separate) federal prisons with Averett when he bragged about details of the crime. Both men testified that they had not been promised anything in exchange for their testimony.
